Protecting Our Environment for Future Generations

Safeguarding Somaliland’s Land, Water, and Climate

Somaliland is on the front lines of climate change. Prolonged droughts, soil degradation, and deforestation have put enormous pressure on the land and the communities that depend on it. Our environment workstream is committed to reversing these trends through community-led conservation, reforestation, and sustainable land management practices.

One of our core efforts is tree planting and reforestation. Trees prevent soil erosion, restore water tables, and provide shade and habitats for wildlife. We organize volunteer tree-planting campaigns in partnership with local schools, youth groups, and community councils, making environmental stewardship a shared responsibility across generations. Every tree planted is a long-term investment in Somaliland’s future.

We also work to promote access to clean water and to protect natural water sources from contamination and overuse. Clean water is life, and in many parts of Somaliland, it remains dangerously scarce. Our volunteers support rainwater harvesting projects, well rehabilitation, and community education around water conservation to stretch every drop as far as possible.

Waste management and pollution awareness are equally important pillars of our work. We partner with local governments and community leaders to launch clean-up campaigns, promote responsible waste disposal, and reduce plastic pollution in urban and rural areas alike. A cleaner environment is not just healthier — it restores dignity and pride in the communities we serve. Finally, we advocate for policies and practices that protect Somaliland’s natural resources at every level. By training local environmental champions and connecting them with global networks of knowledge and support, we help build the expertise needed to make lasting change. A healthier environment means a more resilient Somaliland for every generation to come.
