From Subsistence to Sustainability — Feeding Somaliland’s Future
Food insecurity affects millions of families across the Horn of Africa, and Somaliland is no exception. Recurring droughts, limited irrigation infrastructure, and a lack of modern farming techniques have kept many rural households trapped in a cycle of subsistence agriculture. Our farming workstream is dedicated to breaking that cycle by equipping farmers with the knowledge, tools, and technology they need to thrive.
We work directly with smallholder farmers — the backbone of Somaliland’s rural economy — to introduce drought-resistant crops, better soil management, and water-efficient irrigation systems. These practical improvements can dramatically increase harvests, even in years when rainfall is poor. More food means greater food security, better nutrition, and increased income for families across the region.
Our volunteer agronomists and farming specialists provide hands-on training in modern and sustainable agricultural practices. We believe that knowledge is the most powerful tool we can offer. When a farmer understands how to protect their soil, rotate their crops, and manage pests safely, they gain the ability to improve their own livelihood for years to come without depending on outside aid.
We also help farmers access markets so that their hard work translates into fair economic returns. Many rural producers in Somaliland have no reliable path to sell their surplus goods. We support cooperatives, market linkages, and small business development to help farming families move from survival-level production to genuine economic participation.
In the long run, a food-secure Somaliland is a stable and prosperous Somaliland. Our farming workstream is not just about growing crops — it is about growing confidence, independence, and resilience in every community we touch. With the support of our diaspora volunteers and donors, we can help Somaliland’s farmers feed their families and their nation.
